The Youngest Inheritor of an Ancient Tradition

Zhang Jiahua was born in Jianyang in 1986 — the youngest recognised inheritor of the intangible cultural heritage of Jian kiln Jianzhan-making techniques. His status was earned not by title, but by the daily discipline of glazing, throwing, trimming, and loading the kiln, year after year.

To Zhang Jiahua, the Song people understood fashion — but theirs was a fashion of simplicity and minimalism. Jian ware is its fullest expression: a small black bowl that contains within it centuries of ceramic knowledge, fire, and spirit.

"Jian ware is never a lifeless object. Even with the same shape and glaze, the firing results are ever-changing. No two Jian ware pieces are exactly the same."

Every step — body, glaze, kiln, firing — is critical. The work refines both memory and mastery. Zhang Jiahua believes that Jian ware must return to the people's hands if it is to survive: not kept high and untouchable, but used, appreciated, and passed on.

Those who make tea bowls are craftsmen. And craftsmen must always maintain a heart that is seeking knowledge.
